Please help - I have a brand new 15HP 4 cycle Suzuki outboat but it is impossible to start and it is becoming very frustrating!

90% of the time you can pull this engine 50 times with or without the choke (enrichner) and it won't even cough... (The gas is good and I've squeezed the priming bulb til it's hard.)

Very occassionally it will start properly after a few pulls, and once it's running it generally starts OK while it's still warm - but next day it's typically back to its bad behavior.

The only way I can get it going is to take off the hood, and put a couple of fingers over the air intake, give it a pull and the next time the motor will start.

When the motor does start it runs great.

I surmise there is something wrong with the enrichner/carb but the dealer says they have looked at it and it seems to be working fine - but sure enough the next day it won't start, no matter how many pulls, unless I manually choke it using my fingers.

Anybody have any suggestions...?

Many thanks.

I think you are on the right track, the enrichment isn't working. Does it have a choke butterfly? Does it close?

The dealer NEEDS TO FIX THIS for you.

I agree w/DJ. Take in to the dealer cold and let him show you how to start it and see if he can fisgure out to fix it. That is why you have a warantee on the motor.

Thanks for the replies.

No (unfortunately) it doesn't have a butterfly choke - it has an 'enrichner' which I think is some kind of a little value that opens up when the 'choke' knob is pulled and allows a bit of xtra gas to be drawn into the carb. I belive this isn't working properly.

I've had the motor back to the dealer 3 or 4 times and they claim it starts OK for them and that they checked the 'enrichner' and it's working OK - BUT I still have a major problem starting this beast.

I'm not sure I have a lot of confidence in the dealer at this time so I'm hoping someone can give me some advice on how they fixed a similar problem and I'll use that as leverage to get this fixed.

The 04/05 training manual shows a butterfly choke, the owners manual should tell you how to start the engine.

Hi,
Take it to the dealer again and let them have the boat and outboard with your gas tank etc for a few days. Let them start the outboard every day in a few days out in the open (or as You have the boat/outboard normally). Then the dealer should be able to repeat the problem or...? Or You just visit them with your boat/outboard and show them.

Since You can repeat the problem so should the dealer also be able to do.

If You want to see how the carburator is inside just visit brownspoint.com and Parts Look-Up for a PDF file of all the parts in a DF15.
In Figure 12 Carburator (05), expand the + sign also, You can see all parts of the carburator.
The problem is to figure out what might be wrong (part or setting) if we assume it is a carburator problem.

Until the dealer have repeated the problem it is difficult for them to come up with any suggestions how to solve this.
