new tach install problems

I'm installing a tach on a 89 merc 50hp. It turns on but isn't getting any signal. I've got it hooked up to the gray wire because I thought that was the universal tach color. Is there any place I can directly hook the wire up to so I can bypass the whole wiring harness so I can have a place to start? Thanks.

I believe gray is the choke solenoid, Salmon is the tach signal wire. At least it is on mine.

Can't find any salmon color wires. Unused wires I have gray, tan, tan with blue stripe, brown with white stripe, blue with white stripe, and green with white stripe.

gray is tach signal. you should have purple hooked up to the I terminal Black hooked up up the ground termial and gray hooked up to the send terminal. also you need to make sure your tach is on the right setting for that motor. the little dial on the back of the tach is how you change the setting. with your tach you should of got a paper telling you what setting you need for your motor and how to do it.
