I am looking to install a new tach on my outboard. Merc XR6. Was wondering if anyone had used the style that you just wrap around the spark plug and ground it out? Any bad experiences or good ones? They are very cost efficient is why I'm looking into this. Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Re: New Tach

I take it you are referring to a Tiny Tach. They work OK but for about 20 bucks more you can get an outboard tach.

Not called a tiny tach. What I'm looking at is actually for outboards. Is a digital tach that you just wrap the wire around a spark plug and go.

Re: New Tach

As long as the wires are long enough to work with some slack for motor movement it would work. The ones I have seen have to short of wires for most units and are used for testing the RPM's of the motor. A good tach is not that costly and can be mounted in the dash. You will need to buy a harness for it though that goes from the control/shifter unit to the tach on most Merc controls. JMO

Re: New Tach

The lead is about 6' long which was how long the transducer wire is for my dash mount fishfinder. Thanks for the comments.
