A new law passed on September 1st makes it illegal to have a bracket around your license plate. No brackets are allowed of any kind. If a police officer pulls you over for having one it's a $200 fine. Yep......$200.

People are getting pulled over and ticketed and had no idea about this new law. Anybody else hear about this?

Ladyfish,
I'm confused....are you talking about the one that goes around the edge of my license plate that says were I bought my truck? I did'nt even put it on there. Or are you talking about something different. If so, why do they have this law?

Yep, thats the one. I think its kinda silly myself unless it inhibits an officer's view of the plate number. However, most I've seen do not.

Well they should write warnings instead of tickets, but overall it is a good idea.

Some of this frames are getting riduculour where you can't see the validation stickers, let alone the numbers.

Besides, License plates are technically the property of the state (at least in NY and California).

For law enforcement purposes it is neccessary to have easy to read license plates. There was a big outroar over hear because the started to enforce front plate requirements. But it was part of the vehicle code for many years. All it amonts to is a fix it ticket.

If true this legislation is stupid. It is already against the law to not be able to read you license plates in Texas. And it is against the law not to have them on the front and back of the car. Oh well Ladyfish, we could live in California.... ;)

If the law in fact does make it illegal to have any type of frame around the license plate ,the details of it are in an effort to appease all of these "homey wagons" that have the traveling lights on the frame among other ridiculous accessories.Once again the masses must suffer for the ways of the few. **** low rider trash.

Update.I just called the DMV here in Corpus and the officer said that the new law prohibits any frame or cover that would impead the reading of the plate.Dim plexi-glass covers and the like.He also said that there was a company that manufactured plate frames that would turn on and off at night that helped prompt this new law. So,if you have a dealer frame or say just a chrome frame you'll be OK.

Speaking of frt and rear plates.
In Alberta we're only required to have a rear
plate visible.
But we are redneck cowboys and its hard to mount
a front plate on a horse.

They've been illegal in WI for many many years.

They have recently redesigned the motorcycle plates, so that the Harley crowd can use a frame that does not cover the info on the plate.

Yes, there is a strong Harley lobby in this state.

One of those plate covers are to impead the laser as well. That may have been an issue they had with them as well. It was made to obsorb light instead of reflect it.

This law was to combat those who put a plastic shield on the licence plate to prevent laser speed detectors from getting a good reading.

Guess the cops were gettin pissed that thier new money making toy wasnt making any money.

I dont have a thing against cops, I just hate speed traps. Houston has tons of laser cops.

Ken

Its a good law as long as it keeps all the Mexicans from displaying that red, green and gold Mexico flag frame around their license plate.
They live here in the U.S. and bleed the system for what its worth yet display a flag of their run down country their so proud of? Well they can drive on back.

Saw on the news today that you can have a bracket but it can't obscure any of the numbers stickers, etc.

Thats a good law. I see cars around here with the plexie glass over the licence plate, it makes it very hard to read the plate.

I'll bet they outlaw then on other state in the future too.

Hi LadyFish,

Here in NY, it has always been illegal to put a license plate frame or cover on your plate.

They just have not been enforcing it.

Although now they are starting to.

Some Cop found the regulation and let the cat out of the bag, so now they have another way to collect more revunue, so they can purchase some more of those Lincoln Town Cars for patrol vehicles!

Kenny

Lady,

If these license plate frames are your only problem be thankful.

In New Jersey became effective on 09/17/03 the price for a seat belt ticket doubled from $48 to $96. If you are caught w/o proper Id the ticket doubled from $73 to $146 with madatory court apperance, which means you will be paying court cost with the ticket, lose time at work and have to arrange other things just so you could go to court.

Id= Drivers License, Insurance card, Or registration. And you have to do this even if you come back valid from the dmv check at the time you where pulled over. And you have to be in court for the next session to prove you have the doc's.

What this did was take away the gimme tickets the police give that do not envolve moving violation points and insurance points. What the Police are doing in the Town I work for is not writing those up that have a clean record in stead of giving them the gimme that would have acted like a warning to not let what they did wrong to happen again.

Re: New Texas Law Effective 9-1-03

I was just a little surprised to hear they were fining people since I hadn't read about it prior to this. I agree some plate frames and covers could obstruct view but the case I was referring to only had one of those from the dealer on it.

As far as seatbelts, its $75 here. However, interesting fact on my husband's company life insurance, if he is killed in a car accident and IS wearing his seatbelt, there is an additional $50,000 paid to spouse. I always tell him to buckle up. :p
