Now I have to figure out how to stop my new t-stats from leaking out of the housings (2 out of 4 are leaking) on my 1998 150XL Merc outboards. The gaskets seem to be a compression type where the outside of the gasket expands as pressure is applied. Unfortunately it seems to be a manufacturer defect as the gasket does not completely cover the opening on the head where the t-stat fits into, so not only does it leak water out of the head, but water also is allowed to circulate through the cooling system before the temp of 140f is reached which would run the motor cold for longer...

Any ideas or solutions? I know making a gasket around the housing would help leakage out of the head but wouldn't fix premature water circulation...do they make larger gaskets?
