New throttle cable doesn't work

I bought a new 12' cable and installed it. Now I'm doubly frustrated. It won't even move the throttle arm. The brass end going into the control box just doesn't stay put, so it and the outer sheath move instead of the inner cable core. I don't know how to remedy this. Even though the cable is sold for a Mercury Gen II and otherwise looks like the old one, there is a minor difference: The brass controller end has an articulated joint near its connection to the sheath. That didn't show up at the seller's website. I assumed it simply made re-installing the control box easier.

I thought this was the correct cable! What's incorrect? I need an actual explanation for why it doesn't work. My local boat shop isn't much help; when I went to buy a fuel filter and described my engine, they first tried to sell me one that I knew would not fit.

Do you actually have the newest Alpha GEN II cables and controller?

I'm not sure if mine would be the newest; the boat is a 1997 model built by Godfrey Marine. The picture looks like mine. Both cables are entering the right side of the controller. The only difference I see is that in mine, each cable has a spacer.

I think I mentioned that it's a Quicksilver 3000 controller. I just don't understand what makes the new cable function differently if it's the same length, same diameter, same attachment points but has that articulation. It's the only 12 ft Teleflex I could find for an Alpha 1 Gen II at Great Lakes Skipper that appeared to be the same as mine. Only when it arrived did I see the articulation.

Okay, thanks for the clarification. I was confused by the terminology; the outdrive is Alpha One Gen II, so I assumed that was how I needed to search for a cable. There's darn little info out there that makes that distinction. Wouldn't you think that the places that sell these cables would make it more definite? As in, which controller series takes which cables? I'd be outside removing the one I installed, but for the extreme heat yesterday and the extreme smoke today.

UPDATE: After returning the wrong cable (paying for shipping and restocking fee), I installed the replacement. Guess what? It doesn't work much better than the original. I still have difficulty getting the throttle to return to its proper idle speed. Despite liberal use of carb cleaner both on the linkage and in the throat, the butterfly still wants to stick open a bit after decelerating. I really wish I could put a return spring on it, but there's no place to hook it. Maybe the pivot point has a flat spot on it?

Disconnect the cable at the carb, adjust the idle speed, install cable with slight pressure to close the carb likage
