gSo somewhat new to boating. Made a bad call and bought a boat with an I/O which was toast. So i sold it finally to someone with same motor and outdrive. Now im looking at an 85 bayliner with a 125 force. New floor, new woodwork, new carbs, new impeller, new carpet. Boat looks amazing and we took it out on lake and it runs smooth as a babies bottom and shifts great. Only problem with the whole boat is the tilt up and down. My worry is parts for older motor like a force thats not a popular name brand. Price he wants 1200 for boat motor and trailer. Lifetime on trailer lights all work...almost turn key boat minus the tilt trim. Any ideas on tilt and trim?

Could be a number of things, Pump out, bad switch..... Etc.
I have herd that force is something to shy away from. I would also be a little leary of the deck being replaced. Why was it done and what was the condition of the stringers underneath? Is there a problem that they are trying to cover up?

If he really did replace floor, stringers and transom, the boat is well worth what he's asking. Some say to stay away from the force engines, but I think all the normal replacement parts are being reproduced. Lots of bayliners still running around with force engines. If the tilt/trim isn't working it's probably either the trim pump isn't working or there's a leak in the system and no oil in the system. It could be a defective switch but I wouldn't bank on it. If you're mechanically inclined enough to play with the trim problem yourself, it sounds like it could be a good buy.

Re: new to boating need advice

If I remember correctly Force was basically the old Chrysler brand engines that had been bought out and rebadged. I understand some parts on the older Force engines have been rather hard to come by for years.

Basically the mid 80's Bayliners again were considered to be about the bottom of the rung as far as contruction quality and materials for an entry level boat. Not knocking the brand as I have seen some of the larger Bayliners looked like pretty nice boats from a non owner perspective.

The package you are looking at does not sound like it is priced bad if it is as nice and runs like you say. As far as the trim is concerned you could get away with an aftermarket trim and tilt unit for probably around 500.00 or so if you could not find the parts to fix the OE trim.

The main thing to weigh is if the Bayliner had say a nice Evinrude motor or if the Force motor was on a nice Chriscraft Hull you may be better off than having both main componants of the purchase as a general consensus be of brands that most people would tend to shy away from. If you were to develop problems either with that motor or with that hull you may find it more difficult to sell either the motor or the hull needing to be repowered. If it were to give you no problems then the point would be moot.

so found a different boat...better price...better boat...better motor. I just bought a 17' glastron boat with a 140 evinrude...boat only needs bilge pump and a new wire to nav light. And a piece of carpet that is missing thats it...picked it up for 700.

It's in your best interest to check out the Glastron you just bought very well. A non working bilge usually sends a flag up for me, did it die from being used all the time or not at all, check out the floor well and see if it's soft. Better yet, post some pictures if you can
