I was just given a Starcraft boat, for free!

I know nothing about this boat. Where can i find any info to get this thing running again?

Here's the info i know or guessing at:
17-18' Starcraft 1978ish
120hp Ford 4cyl I/O w/ mercruiser

The guy i got it from said it's been in the lake 3 years ago. had some running issues and has sat since then.

He also said the lower seals need replaced? are these the seals that keep water out in the back of the boat where the motor meets the outboard?

if anyone can help me figure out what to look for to identify this boat that would be great!

If it's a motor issue, I would suggest posting your questions in the mercruiser, volvo section. Really smart folks there to help ya.

Also before you post in the engine section, use search to see how it should be done.
Your current heading will attract no attention from the experts.

The lower seals probably refer to the lower unit, which means you may get water in the gears if you put it in the water. I would second the idea to post in the mercruiser outdrive section. I think they will be able to direct you to info about your boat.

The more information you give the better someone can help you. If you can post some picture of your boat the better it is. Example: Is the boat use in salt water or fresh water? What is the condition of the engine and the stern drive? etc...

BTW, welcome to Iboats.

When you do post questions, you will need the engine serial number/model number and year. Outdrive type (model) and year. And above all be specific. Remember, folks here can't see your boat. You need to do a little research to figure out what you have and what you want to tackle first. Start by getting a service manual for the drive system (engine and outdrive). You have four systems 1) the hull (boat), 2)electrical system 3) engine, and 4) the outdrive. I suggest you start with the engine. Learn how to change the oil, due a tune up (plugs & points). Drain old gas and replace with fresh. Change fuel filters. Charge the battery. Do a compression test. If compression is bad, the engine needs serious mechanical work and you will have to decide where to go from there. If OK, Hook up muffs to a garden hose and see if it will run. The outdrive will need lub changes as well. If it had water intrusion, chances are there is damage internally. You see -- something free is not always good.
