I could really use some advice. My father in law has a boat (he lives on the river) and to be honest that is about all the boating I have ever done. We recently moved to Arkansas and live on Lake Dardenelle. Honestly, who wouldn't get boat fever? A friend of our neighbor has a boat they are wanting to get rid of. Here is where I need advice...I know nothing about boats. It is a 1976 Caprice 1700 SST, with a 165 HP Inboard/Outboard MerCruiser. The boat has always been garage kept and is in great condition considering the age. These are the specifics that I jotted down today when we looked at it: It is 17 ft, Tri-sonic progressive cup-lift hull by Roy Rogers. Everything works but the gas gauges. There are two 12 gallon tanks. The boat runs well. The carb was just rebuilt. They originally asked $2300 for it but said they were negotiable. Can anyone help me find out the boat's worth and any advice on this boat would be much appreciated! Thanks to all in advance. Basically, we are wanting something to fart around in, ride around the lake, maybe let the 6 year old fish a little, picnic out, that sort of stuff. Eventually, maybe even pull an intertube. Before I go and spend 15,000 or more on a boat, I want to start out cheap, see what we want for sure and not lose a butt load of money if we decide on something else.

There is no such thing as a cheap boat!! :D Have someone who knows boats take a good look at it and check for rot. Then have a mechanic give it a once over. It is a good investment to spend a couple of bucks on someone who knows what to look for on a boat this old. If it checks out, have a great time on your new boat!!

Thanks for the replies guys. There is a marina in town. I will stop by tomorrow and talk with them and schedule to take the boat in for a look over. According to NADA, if I have the info in correct, the asking price is a few hundred dollars over high end retail. Thanks again.
