Hey whats up fellas and ladies...I am new to the boating world and I am about to make my 1st purchase of a 1981 Glastron APV 16' bass/ski boat and I had a few questions.

A: What kind of work is it to sand the whole boat down and repaint it with the boat having minor cosmetic issues?

B: I know in my biker world bondo is not your best friend for the minor scuffs and dings that would be ok for cars...how would it do in the boat world?

C: I would like to paint the hull a different color and what kind of paint would be the most cost effiecient along with the best quality? I will post pics when I figure out how to shrink them down.

Now this being my first boat at the age of 26 I was wondering if it was a great starter or not. I have posted a few threads in the other forums and I have gotten some good feedback. It is always welcome and most appreciated if you guys could be honest with the negative and positive opinions as I am not sure with what I should jump on first.

Here are the specs

1981 Glastron APV 165 bass/ski boat with a fiberglass hull

Motor info: 1981 115 Johnson outboard

Trailer info: 1981 Magnum

let me know what you think!!!!

check out pics of work so far from John. What you want to do he has already done and documented extremely well. Cost effective paint and at least 792,000 man hours later his boat is truly amazing! Good luck. by the way, I am 28 if that helps you not feel all alone! Hell there is a kid that is 16 on here and his work stands alone if you know what I mean. DOnt sewat it, get to work and more than likely with a boat that old, you will soon have a shell of a boat asking how to do a stringer and transom redo.

My opinion

A) The amount of work you put in is up to you. There is a process, it is not impossible but it does take some work and money. Do some searches in here and research before tackling it.

B) Bondo is not generally used in marine applications. It can soak water. There are marine fillers made for the job you mention.

C) The best paint to use is marine paint. It varies in price but is all generally expensive. (not compared to automotive finishes) $30-$80 a quart is a good range. The prep and application of marine finishes is a different animal than automotive paints. The good thing is that you do not need a compressor and a spray gun to apply it. (but it can be sprayed) You can paint your boat with 2 quarts.
