Hi everybody,
Just picked up a 1984 regal 277XL with twin Merc 470's. Been having fun so far cleaning the boat up and learning.

The issue I'm having is the following.

the port engine seems to be coming out of gear while running at just about any RPM. In other words while in forward, the engine will start to rev up, I let off on the throttle until it seems to catch again and then go on my merry way...There seems to be no set pattern or noise associated with this.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,....

Have you checked the oil in the drives,..??
Have you pulled the drives, 'n aligned/ serviced the transom,..??

It could be prop slippage, but it doesn't fit the normal pattern for it..
Usually, it don't hook up, 'n go...

Spun prop hub or engine coupler..What happens if you just run your port engine? will it still rev up and then...catch? Or does it just keep revving?

It slips ...then I'll throttle down and it'll catch again .

Yeah, Learned that lesson fairly quickly.

Never thought I'd find a hobby more expensive than Harleys.

I couldn't possibly have been more wrong.

Did ya figure out what the problem is ? I have seen boats with spun prop hubs still work at low load/rpms Not so sure on engine coupler, If the metel sleeve strips out on the inside, I dont think you are going any where, If the rubber part spins, you may have enough grip left to putt back to the dock. But not sure.
