Hello, I'm looking for some opinions on these 2 pictures. The boat this out drive is attached to is claimed to have 340 hours. The boat is also from the Chicago area .
Not being familiar with Volvo drive units (Mercruiser owner since 1973) I'm asking fellow boat owners for help.
The outdrive just doesn't look very good for the hours. Especially when compared to my 1500 hour Merc.
Your opinions are welcomed, and looked forward too.
Thank you, Bill
O, it's my daughter that's looking for a boat.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... The lower unit appears to be a new replacement,...

The upper is that of a moored boat,...

I would agree with the mooring, and water spray while running. My concern is what appears to be oil seeping where the unit meets the gimbal housing. Also where the curved cover meets the metal. Sorry, I should have mentioned that in my orignal post.

The boat is being sold at a dealer on consignment, the dealer did say the lower unit was replaced/repaired. Apparently the area this boat was used in is notorious for being shallow between ajoining lakes.
It is a nice Chaparral boat, here's a link.

It's also 175 miles away, and I don't have the time to look at it for the Daughter.

Thanks, Bill

Edit, the link doesn't seem to be working.

No way of telling if it's a leak or just oily marks from when previous work was done. It does have a new lower.
Short of pulling the drive and checking the bellows and that area, along with draining a pressure testing the drive there is no way of knowing if it leaks now.
Any records of what has been done? Obviously something has.

I would suggest a mechanical survey, of the boat and engine/drive before purchasing if you can't check for yourself.

Re: New to forum, not to boats.

First, thanks for looking and responding to my first thread.
Here's a update. My Daughter has a friend in Chi town that went and looked at this boat. Long story short, the boat wasn't what the Daughter and SIL were told by the dealer. From what she told me its a little rough around the edges. If fact not in as good of condition as my '95 Chaparral.

Thanks again, Bill
