New to Gas Motors - HELP

So locally I found a decently priced mid 90S Yamaha 6hp to go on my 12ft Lund.

I know LESS than nothing about gas motors and have always just had electrics to push my little boat around.

He is asking $500 and insists all is good.

Are there a couple of key things I should look at pre-purchase? I guess getting him to fire it up in a tank is a good start. Any sounds or smells or coloured smoke I should look out for like buying a car?

ANY pointers AT ALL, would be of great help.

Thanks,

Damien

Re: New to Gas Motors - HELP

at this point unless you really really trust they guy you need to take the motor to a yamaha dealer, have them do a mechanical survey and run it in a test tank with the correct test wheel.
if it passes and the lower unit oil is ok. then buy it. have a new water pump andT-stat installed along with new a fuel filter.
then go play.
you would not believe how many motors I see that were just bougt and ran good on the flusher but had a bad piston or a failed gearcase.
