I bought this old motor with a fresh OMC dealer rebuild from 2002. You know the story guy got the work done and put 15 hours on the motor, then got sick, his kids are getting rid of the stuff now 9 years later. The motor started right up and ran good at the looksee, tested at 140psi plus in each cylinder so I gave them $500 for it. I have a friend at the dealer so I am trying to get the invoice to see exactly what was done. There are new gaskets on the head and the first section back but not where the case comes apart. I replaced all the fuel lines, plugs, lower unit oil, put a 13 p prop on it and hung it on my 19 foot pontoon. I took it over today to check it out and for the most part it runs good.

The motor will only turn that 13 at 4800 rpm (using a tinytach). It seems to me my old 50 did a little better than that with the same prop, although I did drop to an 11 on that before I sold it. I went from the 50hp to a 90hp and now for a lot of reasons I am going back to a mid range motor. I am going to check the butterflies at WOT, and rebuild the fuel pump. No surging except for one brief second. The motor really ran well, but I wonder if I should take the carbs apart anyway.

The other thing is it doesn't seem to be charging. I am waiting for a manual as we speak but I'd appreciate any advice I can get on troubleshooting the charging system. The stator looks like it has been replaced. There are 2 wires sticking out of the red plug harness where it goes past the solenoid, one light blue, the other light green. These wires are capped off and not attached to anything. The motor also will not shut off with the key, and the alarm sounds weakly when you put it in reverse   Heaven only knows what is going on in the control box, but that will be my starting point. The alarm sound loudly when you short the OH wire to ground. All in all I think this motor will be fine after I work the bugs out. I'm looking for a little advice on chasing some of this down. I'm a pretty good mechanic and sorted similar issues out on my 90 Johnson with help from the forum.

Any help fellas? How about the blue and green wires in the engine harness, what are they for?
