I just purchased an "82 Galaxy bowrider. On the test drive, I could not figure out how to get the boat to go in reverse... The control lever has a thumb trim button and a button under the hand lever. Instructions on the control lever say "pull for neutral". I could get it to go forward and in neutral, not in reverse. Something i am missing, or possible linkage problem?

Need to understand which control you have to fully understand

Most controls where the handle pivots from either have a button which pushes IN. The button is pushed in to place in throttle only mode. This mode allows the throttle to be increased without being in gear. The button is pushed in, the button under the handle is squeezed in and the handle can be moved. To place back in normal mode just return handle to neutral position.

In normal mode the button under the handle is squeezed and moved FWD or REV. The button under the handle is to lock it in neutral

OMC's used the pull handle out for reverse vs a push button

however without knowing if this is an outboard or I/O boat, cant comment much more.

OK. So I have more info on the boat. It is an 82 galaxy 470 I/O motor. From what I understand from alldodge, the button under the hand lever allows the boat to be in gear when moved, otherwise it is in neutral the whole time? this makes sense, as i was only getting increased rpm when pulling the lever back.
