Hi Guys,

I'm new to this forum and coming out of a 89' 15' Forester Phantom with a 50 Evinrude on the back. We just purchased a 1992 Bayliner Capri 18' Open Bow with a 120 Force. I have 2 questions that I hope that you guys can help me out with.

1) It has been winterized and not ran this year. Can I just prime and start with muffs on?

2) What are the common issues with these 120 Force's?

Thanks!

Chad

Winterizing is like skinning a cat, there are a million ways to do it. Anyways, pull and inspect all the plugs. Then spray in fogging oil (or oil-fuel mix) into the cylinder, rotate the flywheel CW to distribute the lube. Replace the plugs. Drain a little gear oil and inspect for clarity. If not clear might as well replace it. Shoot grease on all grease fittings. Discard and replace the old gas if any. And you should be ready to fire it up. spark Plug fouling is be common with this engine because they always want to ran at high rpm and the fact people mostly want to ran the idle setting at rich setting.

If you don't know when the fuel pump diaphragm and water pump impeller were last replaced, it may be a good time to change them too. If either one fails, they're show stoppers. 18' Capri does not paddle well. I don't know if there are any guidelines on how often they should be changed, but I change mine every 2 - 3 years depending on how many hours I put on the motor. So far.......knock on wood, I've never been stranded due to a failure of either one.

Do a compression/spark test.
Check the lower unit oil too.
Someone SAID it was winterized????? Check it out.
Lot's of people buy a good motor only to find out it's bad.

LONGGGG time ago I had a 15ft 85hpMerc.
Advertized it to sell.A guy came by and offered me 2/3 of my asking price.
He said can I hear it run.It started and ran.
Took his offer.
Turns out the middle cylinder was toast.Cost him another 700$ to get it fixed.
I didn't know ANY thing about repairs then.
Thank G that It was an as is sale!!!!
