Greetings all...another forum for a new communication. Forums are GREAT! I've learned so much and gained so much knowledge from sharing experiences with people in the same "boat".

OK, anyway...I purchased a 1984 Sea Ray SRV 225, about the same as the
23' Weekender of the following years. The boat has a Mercruiser 260, deep cuddy, stand up head, sink with fresh water holding tank, dual burner stove top. I really love it. Had it out about 5-10 times and it's been good to me so far. I'm currently having a bridge enclosure so when I take it out and it rains, the cockpit doesn't get wet, again. I've had it out in the lakes to make sure everything's OK and plan on taking it out to the ocean soon. The only issues thus far are...it stalls sometimes during low idle...can be a problem when docking and or loading up on the trailer. It takes on more water than it should. I'll check that out this week by backing the trailer in the water and crawling down in the engine compartment to find out where it's coming from. The one thing that concerns me is the noise when turning the wheel. It's louder than going straight so it may be a barring. I'm going to have the outdrive serviced soon to have that checked. I paid $5,000 for the boat, the enclosure will cost about $800 and the outdrive service will cost about $600, assuming no big parts need to be replaced. Any suggestions or advice? Since this is an older boat, should I not put too much into it?

Thanks for the help.

That problem will probably decide how much it's worth putting into the boat. If it's a matter of a simple seal or bellows to replace and the boat has been well maintained and you like it, it'll be well worth the cost of the continued routine maintenance.

On the other hand, if it's leaking because of a soft transom, don't be surprised if the rot has spread to the stringers and floor. Probably not worth putting much into it at that point unless you're willing to do a whole lot of time-consuming restoration work yourself.

have the outdrive and engine serviced, complete tune up, if going offshore. find your leak, i also have multiple bilge pumps. the bellows, thru hull fittings, and the hull joint, between topside and hull, are known places for leaks.

You know I've been thinking the leak is something simple and cheap to fix, just haven't taken the time to check it out. I just turn the bilge pump on every half hour or so. I will check that out before I put anything really into it. I hope it's not anything serious.

boy you got it over me there. i pump our bilge once every 24 hrs and it dosnt run for over 30 seconds. if i had to pump every hour it would drive me nuts not knowing where the water was coming from

Yeah...I really should've checked it out sooner. I looked today and think it may be coming from a through hull port that was used for a wash down or bait tank, but is now capped off...it seems like it may be a spot. I really won't know till I lower in in the water and climb down in there with a flashlight. The one issue is where I'm lowering it in, I can't start it up...it's a paddle boat lake in Van Nuys. But at least I can see if anything is appearant.

I'm going to put a secondary bilge pump in there also...someone told me to glue a peice of wood to the hull and screw it in the wood...sounds good, huh?

I haven't brought the boat to water yet, so I figured I'd try some other way of finding out where the water may be coming in from. I filled the bilge with water pretty high, let it sit for a half hour...nothing. The drain plug, bottom of transom and port where bone dry on the outside. So I guess it must be coming from a cooling hose or something like that. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Ayuh,.....

My 1st WAGuess is,...
The drive Bellows are Holed....
That'll let water into the Boat,+ trash the U-joints,...
And,...
The Bad U-joints is the Noise you're hearing when turning the wheel.....
