picked a 1989 19ft regency boat today, all new interior, new carb, new tune up, engine is clean enough to eat off of it. has a bunch of reciepts that came with it from previous winterizing and maintainence. aside from that, it has a 351 ford and a cobra outdrive. i picked up this boat knowing it had this issue, but not sure what it might be. it goes into forward no problem whatsoever, but to put it from neutral to reverse...you have to really pull...like your playing tug o war. any ideas? the shift cable is red, and looks new...but that dont mean a whole lot ive been reading here and there. it also has through hull exhaust that i can deal with in the short term, but i can see it becoming a nuisance to other boaters as it is pretty loud. is there a muffler that clamps on the exterior of the pipes...on the back of the boat? looking for a "simple" fix really. dont have to be dead quiet, but at least toned down a hair.

Your cable is out of adjustment
Your cable is bad
Or both
Stop pulling so hard to get it in reverse you are making it worse
Since forward is easy you may not be that far off.
Un hook the lower shift cable at the engine and try shifting by pushing/pulling on it. Then move your control to reverse and see it it lines up. Bet it doesn't

while it was running i tried to put it in reverse....the engine stumbled on the stutter switch like it should, but as soon as the control went toward reverse the engine shut off. tried it again, and it stops the engine dead in its tracks. forward goes easy as can be though...which is odd

also, with the engine off, i had my son turn the prop while i tried to change gears. from neutral to forward the prop engaged (he couldnt turn it after i moved it into forward. i could put the control all the way into reverse and the prop never engaged. im really hoping this is just a shift cable issue, because other than that, this boat is in great condition.

It is the cable. The esa should not engage out of the water.
Disconnect the esa and see if it still dies when you put it in reverse.

I can get the cable kit on amazon for 60 bucks, 2-3 hours labor @ 79/hr
Easy enough.

I read through a lot of that. Not knowing a lot of the technical terms for specific parts is what throws me off.

pull the drive and take a look at things. Seeing how everything interacts makes it much simpler to follow/understand the instructions. It sounds like a cable allignment issue, but pull the drive and make sure everything is clean around your bell crank. My boat sat for 10+ years before I bought it so I had a lot of work to do to get it water ready. I didnt have reverse in my Cobra so I removed the drive to replace the cable and there was so much efflorescense that the bellcrank wouldnt move. I removed the eff., cleaned the bell crank and surrounding area, did a double check on the cable adjustment, put it back together and now it shift perfectly into reverse.
Always better to pull thedrive just to have a look at things as well as lube the u joints, and spindle.

Good Luck
