First post on here.
picked up a 1979 Johnson 70 Seahorse
I haven’t put it in the water yet.
put ears on it problem it takes a minute or so to start but once it’s ran it fires up very quickly.
can you recommend repair or is this normal?
also are there any free service manual downloads?
thanks

I don't know much about the starting issue. Carb, fuel line? What I read on these forums about "new to me" motors is to change lower unit oil, new spark plugs, and new water pump. At a minimum, Buy a factory manual on ebay.

What is your starting procedure? It should be as follows
1 Pump primer ball until firm
2 Raise fast idle lever about a 1/4 of the way up
3 push key in and start motor adjust fast idle as needed.
If you are doing this is the choke working? Good idea to change the water pump and gear lube
