I Bought a 1975 50 hp Merc. I dont know how to lock it in the UP position. After searching this forum, I read about it having to be in forward to release the lock to raise it up (and it worked) but how do I lock it in the up position if i need to? (it is a Manual Tilt)

Thanks

There is a little knob thing on the tilt tube, you rotate it down and it locks it up...

I'll try and find a picture...

ok... no stupid questions here right? I found the assembly but don't understand how they work. Do you rotate each side individually? What keeps them in so they can rest on the little tabs? Im concerned about being able to get to each side and lock the motor up when the boat is in the water, so i can head into shallow waters for panfish.

Thanks

Not sure, might be different than mine...

on my 1975 65hp the little nub rotates down as a solid shaft... turn one side both sides rotate and then it pretty much blocks it in the up position.

Your motor may have item# 23 of the following diagram that locks the motor in the up position.
Mercury Marine 500 CLAMP AND SWIVEL BRACKET ASSEMBLY Parts
You have to move that lever to where the bolt sets in the notch to keep it up, and move it back to let the motor back down when needed.

That old "dog ear" shaped system will hold the motor up, even if the two side pieces are separate. Just tilt the motor up and turn one of the "ears" until it jams against the transom clamp. Second choice is to use a piece of 2X6 to keep her tilted.
