Good Morning, We live on a lake in MA & have two boys 12 & 15 looking to buy our 1st jet ski. Small lake, 110 acres. Been reading up on pros & cons & would like to stay below $3000. Thoughts in general as to definite "no go"? Found this:2000 waverunner 800 jetski for sale. It runs great and looks great. The motor has 85 hours on it and has perfect compression. $2500 Thoughts?

Again, new to this, so thanks for your help. Like to have good intel when I go to my husband with recommendations!

$2500 for a waverunner? Seems high bud, but then, i'm in CA. If your looking for skis, THEY could ride, go after single seaters. Hoiwever, if its something, you/wife/girlfriend... wouldnt mind jumping on, from time/time, get 1-1seater and 1-2/3seater....96/97xp and/or 97gti...any 3 seater above 97 (new style), that has the 720 motor.

something to this...http://hartford.craigslist.org/boa/3962947384.html

http://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/boa/3965634839.html (has the 800cc)

http://nh.craigslist.org/boa/3906891625.html (this style with the 800cc engine..97 only).

I looked at that 2 seater but thought it was too good to be true. Thanks! I am looking for a 2 or 3.

Re: New to PWC

PWCs are often run hard and put away wet, by people who know nothing about maintenance, or would do it even if they knew.

My son bought a $3K ski and had to invest more in it than that to keep it running. We junked it and when he saved up another $3K I went in halfers and we bought a new one, with the agreement that I could use it too. The wife and I liked it so much we gave it to him 2 years later and we bought another new one just for ourselves.

I'm quite familiar with the Yami 800. Its a good 'ski as far as durability, but its a bit tippy. At least if you had a SeaDoo in comparison. Regardless of the low hours (obviously it hasn't been run much) you have to understand its a 13 year old machine and its condition is only as good as the owner took care of it. Best to have a Yami mechanic check it over and you do a sea trial as well.

Re: New to PWC

I had a yami 800, it was fast but BOUCY. And really only good for 2 people.

The best two stroke for 3 people, for cheap, is the Yami waveventure 1100...IMO. VERY stable boat, TONS of storage, and decently fast. Two strokes are fun but you gotta get rid of the oil injection system, and premix your own gas, to make sure the engine won't pop.

Before you buy ANY pwc, take it on the lake for a test run. Also.....check the engine compression .

Re: New to PWC

What are you looking for? Stability, or instability? Do you want to go fast and do donuts, or do you want to tube and wake board? I fyou want stability, you need a 3 seater model. If you want the boys to mostly just zip around solo but ocassionally be able to ride with two, than get a two passenger model.

As to price, there are two markets in this country. Those that live on CA and FL and those that live everywhere else. You pay less in CA and especially FL IMO because most of them have been destroyed by salt water and you typically see much higher hours. Its not uncommon to see skis in FL with hundreds of hours on them and re-built motors, etc....

Up here in WI and MN, the market tends to be really strong and we can only use them 3 months out of the year.

That price seems very reasonable to me.

When you buy something that old you always have the risk of the the thing being shot or needing a lot of maintence. Getting one with low hours and good compression is two ways to lower the risk. IF you are fine with throwing the money away, then I say go for it. With two teens that might be inexperienced, they could trash it anyway :)

The two worst things you can do riding it are sucking up rocks and running it out of oil.

Also, MAKE SURE you check the prop clearance on any used ski in addition to the compression.

If its looks good and rides good and especially it its a one owner and you are fine with the price, go for it.

Here is another idea....buy new. If you buy this time of year, the deals are the best. You might be able to find a 2013 Kawasaki Ultra LX which would be a great ski for the family. Stable, but fun, great on fuel, 3 seater, 160 hp and you can find them now for $8,000 ($10,500 in the Spring). Or, find a STX 15F for a grand less. Same motor, but smaller hull. Faster and more nimble. Own either for 5 or 6 years and get 80% of your money back when you sell as long as you sel
l in the Spring.

The first two posts are deleted and the last one if for a hull only. No motor or moving parts.
