1989 yamaha prov 150

What is the best manual for a rebuild?

My #1 cylinder has zero compression.

I have rebuilt 302 motors. Never an outboard though.

Is this a no-no? The yamaha dealer wants 3-4k to rebuild. How much of this do you think is labor?

Are parts impossible to get?

Thanks for any guidance in advance!

The best manual is the factory sevice manual. A good mechanic who follows the instructions can do this much easier than you would think. Parts are readily available in factory or aftermarket. Advise and information is plentiful here. You will need to tear down and see what parts are needed before answering that last question. You will also need to determine the cause and correct before finishing the job. Good Luck.

Ray gives good advice,follow it.
the second piece of advice >I will give you is to forget anything you ever thought of knowing about car engines and follow the service manual to the absolute letter.
but before rebuilding just the motor you MUST find out what subsystem failed and caused a mechanical failure.
I have done this gig almost 30 years and have seen only 2 motors actually wear out. its very rare that a two stroke wears out.
incredibly rare.
most die due to lack of proper maint.
that 89 proV was about as bullet proof as yamaha ever made with the exception that I always thought the wrist pins were to light.
