Hello Everyone,

I just picked up a 1976 Viking deck boat (for a real good price) .

I know there are a lot of wiring diagrams for boats out there on the web, as well as on iboats.com but I want to get help specifically for my situation. First off, I am just getting into electrical wiring, so If I am missing something simple please forgive me. Basically there are old wires all over the place leading from the lights, radio, bilge, etc. So I plan to start over and re do everything. First off, I know that I need to wire the outboard motor directly to the battery, so that takes up two of the four battery posts. Now, this is where I get confused. How do I get power from the battery to the distribution panel with the switches for the dash, when I only have two battery posts left? Or do I need another panel for the main power supply, and then wire the switch panel from that? Again, Sorry if I am missing something simple, and thank you for advice/help!

The very big battery cables run directly to the engine. From there, 12 volts passes through the cable with many wires in it from the engine to the control box. The "A" terminal on the ignition switch feeds power to the gauges so they are controlled when the key is turned on and off.

You need a 10 gauge red and black wire from the battery to the fuse panel. Circuits branch out from there to each device.

So you would run the electrical wires (+) & (-) from battery to the switch panel shown below, and then from the switch panel to each individual device? Or do I need a fuse block inline?

The battery wires go to a fuse or circuit breaker panel first. Then the switches feed current to the various devices. If the switch panel you decide to use has circuit breakers or fuses built into it, you don't need a separate fuse/breaker panel. A complete, generic wiring diagram is provided on this link:
