I just bought a used 21 ft Grady White with a 1992 501. The p.o. said that the raw water pump was bad, however when we took itbto a shop to buy, they said the pump was good, however the cover was worn.

They also suggested that we flip the cover upside down and replace the impeller which I did. However the outdtive does not appear to be suckingu nough water and it is overheating. I also replaced the thermostat, and suggestions? This is my first boat, im handy with cars though. Thanks everyone!

No, but it draws water from the leg where there is an alloy connection that frequently rots and allows air into the suction side of the raw water pump, check that. If you do a search on here you will find lots about it and also pictures.
Oh and please indicate what kind of drive and motor you have as it make life easier for us to help.
