on an older 12foot tinny....

What is the best wood to use?

What is the best way to treat/finish the wood before instalation?

What are the acceptable methods of treating/finishing the wood (if any)?

I plan on making the inside and outside boards slightly larger than they were in hopes of increasing the rigidity of the transom.

Also, there is no drain plug hole in the transom. The boat is light to tip the water out but the plan is to trailer it so I am wondering if it is worth it to try making a hole for a drain plug bushing. What would you say about this.....?

i am not a tinny guy....so weigh this with a ton of salt.

first of all.......regular exterior grade ply.
marine if you can afford or find it.....NOT PRESSURE TREATED !

imho....all transom wood should be incased in glass....even a tinny...it will last forever....(20 some odd years or better).

as far as the garboard drain....again...im not a tinny guy....but id do it

if you can get it in, i would put a full transom in. 2layers of laminated 3/4 exterior plywood, either glass it, or a minimum of 3 coats of oil base paint they make many thru hull drains. i suggest the type that has the flange of the outside, and nut on the inside. i have done many aluminum boats.
a picture of the inside and outside of your transom, would help to get more specific.

Thanks OOPS! and TD !!

The transom has a brace to the hull at the bottom, a couple of rivets in the middle of no where and several rolled in stiffening ribbs that need to be worked around.

The reinforcement molding at the top of the transom has room for 3/4 plywood on each side of the transom without protrusion.

The black around the transom/hull seam is silicone (yuck).

Any thoughts on refinements and/or other options are appreciated.
