new trim switch blows fuse

I recently replaced the trim switch assembly in my quicksilver control box for my 1990 merc 135. As soon as I turn the battery on the starter fuse blows (in the motor compartment) but when I disconnect the new switch everything is fine. In the control box there are 4 ground wires (black wires) that screw together however, if I leave them apart (ungrounded) then the switch and the ignition will work fine and I won't blow a fuse. Any suggestions on where to check next or what I am doing wrong? Anyone have a schematic on the proper wiring for this? Thanks

p.s. this is a great website- tons of info

recheck your wiring on the new switch also is it the same type/part number as the old switch.

Re: new trim switch blows fuse

I rechecked the wiring and it looks good. The switch I bought was supposedly the exact same factory switch (it looks exactly the same). I pieced back together the old broken switch and got it to work enough to raise the engine so its obviously the new switch as the root of the problem. The switch I bought is part 87-18286A43 for a 1990 Merc 135 black max (with quicksilver control box)...Are there other switches out there that I could use? Thanks
