Re: New trim tab brand, opinions???

I like the trim tabs that go on the boat better. They allow you to trim boat first then trim motor for best speed or rpm. this makes them a little better. Also if have a cross wind where boat leans into the wind or a unblanced load can still adjust the boat flat. Bottom line is all trim tabs raise the back of the boat, that means front goes down and more wetted surface, lower top end use a little more fuel. On most boats very small difference. On my boat with Bennett 24 wide by 12 deep lost about 1 mile per hour. Only time I get better fuel mileage is if in a heavy sea and I have to slow down but I can still stay on plane with the trim tabs then I get better fuel mileage. Without tabs my boat will stay on plane to about 18 mph, with tabs down to 10. The tabs are the best thing I ever added to my boat. It is safer smoother and a better ride. It give you more control over what your boat does. I use them every time out to adjust for Wind, Load and seas.

Re: New trim tab brand, opinions???

Hi Boatist..

I'd prefer boat tabs as well, but there are a couple of things that make that impossible.

1. Cost, in Australia it would cost me around 700+ dollars to get them.
2. Transom space, I have a narrow transom, and with main motor, kicker, and all the other stuff like speedo pitot, transducer, ladder, I have no room to fit them.

So I figured that the next best thing might be this permatrim mob.. so I was hoping someone experianced with boat/trim design would see the page and commment on them...

Thanks for the tips..

regards

Frank

Those things work well for the "hole shot" but are not a true "trim tab" that serves a different function.

Frank, I have used similar fins on a 50hp. outboard and a 120 IO I think I paid $60.Worth every penny! They work very well for what they are intended to do.Make the boat plane easier help to keep the bow from bounding as much.
They save gas because the boat planes at lower engine speed. Yours appears to be somewhat more primative but whose to say it wont work as well.
The fins Ive seen looked more like a hydrofoil
or little wing. I havent priced fins in a long time but I think they are around 30 dollers for a medium size. Yours doesnt seem to be large enough to do much but help plane the boat.
Maybe the company can tell you where to test drive or talk to a dealer. Spike

Re: New trim tab brand, opinions???

Frank,
Many people love the outboard mount fin but I wasn't sold. I've heard they can cause damage to your lower end unit where they mount but I mainly steered clear because they don't add stability and control the way trim tabs do. I went for something called "Smart Tabs". These are somewhere between a dolefin and the big trim tabs in price and appearance. You get a pair of self-adjusting small stainless steel trim tabs on gas shocks. They mount out on ends of the transom like the big Bennetts, but they fit fine on the back of my 16' where a bennet would never fit. The difference is pretty dramatic. I get a bump in hole shot, 3 mph more top speed, balanced trim (I had a tendency before to list depending on payload) and way way more control (I can now turn tightly at high speed while remaining on plane and keeping speed, and I can also clear most wakes at speed without pounding) I know you have these things in OZ because before I bought them I found an online review of them from an Ozzie but I can't find it now. Try this link for a review http://www.docksidemagazine.com/Dec_2000/Dec_Featuredprods/Equipment/smartabs2.htm

Thanks Guys,

I am drooling over the smart tabs.. just don't think they will fit my boat with the serious lack of space on the transom...

but I may do some measurements, and if I can find a way to fit them in, I'll start looking at the cost.. if I can't, I am thinking the permatrim is the next best thing. :) (not, but its better then nothing..)

regards

Frank

Yeah, it turns out that my motor is just a tilt.. it says tilt trim on the switch.. but its just a tilt.. and I am in alot of varied water so I will miss the trim bigtime..

so now I look for alternatives.. I'd love hydrolic tabs.. but the smart tabs seem to have it all anyway..

regards

Frank

Frank, don't know the size of your boat, motor or transom, but smart tabs aren't very big compared to Bennets. mine are only about 10" wide and fit on a transom for a 16' with room left for a speedo pitot and transducer on one side of the motor, plus the tabs can be easily "deactivated", in which case they do not interfere with my kicker.

Re: New trim tab brand, opinions???

True Story. A few years back , I was looking for a smaller boat than my
Four Winns cuddy, mainly for taking the family out on small lakes for water
skiing and tubing. After looking around a bit, I purchased a Stingray 180
RX bowrider. It seemed to meet our space and performance needs and seemed
like a real value for it's cost. And it was, except for one glaring fault.
At anything less that W.O.T and speeds below 35-40, it would porpoise
horribly unless you kept the trim fully down. Because you had to drive with
bow always plowing the water, instead of planing as it was designed to,
cornering was very unpredictable, gas mileage suffered and handling in
general was poor. It got to be so bad, my wife refused to drive it when I
wanted to ski. Having owned many other boats that you could trim at any
speed (once on plane), I knew this was not correct and tried to work with
first my dealer, then Stingray the company, to get this corrected. To make
a long story short, lets just say they both were an absolute joke. All I
had to show for months of effort of trying to go through the proper
channels, was countless unanswered phone calls and e-mails, wasted trips to
the dealer, money wasted on another prop, a lot of frustration and the
first hand knowledge (after trying other 18 & 19 foot Stingrays out) is
that they all porpoise just as badly! Many other disgruntled owners had
also contacted me with this same issue, after I started asking for help on
various boating forums. But just as I was convinced this is a flaw in the
design and was putting the boat up for sale, I learned of the smart tabs
from Nauticus. I contacted the company, who was very helpful and promised
they would completely fix my porpoising problem. After all I had gone
through with the shallow answers and promises from my dealer and Stingray,
I was extremely skeptical, but I went ahead and ordered a set, figuring it
was a lot cheaper than buying another boat. Got them a few days later and
installed them in about an hour.
Let's just say the results were far beyond my highest hopes. There is
absolutely no more porpoising. None whatsoever, no matter what speed or
trim the motor is at. Additional benefits are that the thing planes almost
instantly, it virtually doesn't even lift the bow at all! You feel like
you're in a car, not a boat when you take off! Because of this the hole
shot improvement is amazing. Heavy slalom skiers I could not pull out of
the water previously, now are no problem. Gas mileage is improved and the
thing corners predictably and rides much better. I even called the owner of
the company and thanked him personally. That was 2 years ago, and I can
truly say I am now 100% satisfied with this same boat I was so disgusted
with before the smart tabs installation, and can't even imagining using it
without the smart tabs. I hear so much about boaters looking for
performance improvements with expensive engine and prop modifications,
or complicated hydraulic or electric trim tabs,
when they could just add a set of these and get better performance
improvements (except top speed, that was not affected) at a fraction of the
cost. Several of my boating friend have installed them after they heard of
my success, with similar positive results. So go ahead and give them a try,
you won't regret it. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

The permatrim hydrofoils are now available in the USA. No more hassles trying to order from New Zealand. We are Permatrim's USA dealer/distributor.
