Hello, All !!! I was pretty tickled when I ran across this Forum.....a lot of good guys & gals and a lot of good info!
I just got a steal of a deal on a boat, motor, and trailer, a 17' Silverline Comoro-(I think) with a '72 100hp Johnson Hydro Electric Drive.
I've fiddled with a few motors before...nothing major....but may need some help with the electronics on this one. It has good compression, good lower unit, plugs, wires, it cranks good and looks like new under the cover but no spark. I've ordered a manual but it will be a while before it gets here.
I've been using the time to bone up using this site .....maybe someone has some advice about those things like I always end up wishing I new then what I know now that I've broken it or made it worse.
Sounds like I might need some special equipment if I'm gonna do this myself, any suggestions?
...maybe there are parts that might be suspect that I can easily test in the mean time?
A Buddy once told me to stay away from the Electric Shift but this thing practically fell in my lap.:D

Does it have a kill switch? Did you check it?

Yes, welcome aboard!

Unless I am mistaken 1972 still used magneto and points, right? (Someone please correct me if I am wrong.)

Nevermind - I was wrong.

Until your factory manual gets there, you can check out the ignition troubleshooting at this website: cdi.com. I ran a 72 100 hp for years-was a great engine. Never gave me a lick of trouble.

You'll need a volt/ohmmeter with a dva adapter and an open air gap spark tester for starters.

Re: NEW user....OLD man with NEW project

Thanks for the input, guys...and thanks, QC for puttin' this where it belongs, I thought that's where I had it but musta screwed up. I didn't see a kill switch but I'll be sure and take a 2nd look, good advice! Ignition is the power pack (battery type?) and say's "Pulse Pack" on it. Looks like it's fairly new, and yeah, I sure don't want to be replacing that every weekend....I hope there's a good way to test it rather than have to just gamble on a new one. I've already learned a lot on the cdi site. Hey, emdsapmgr....was yours an electric shift. Maybe this one will be a cherry too, and not a lemon. She'd been sittin in the woods for a few years but is in pretty good shape for the shape she's in. At any rate, I shouldn't have any trouble gettin my hundred bucks back even if I have to scrap it. I'd rather get it up 'n runnin' though, I get such a kick out of the learnin' even if it costs me. Thanks again....I plan to take full advantage of all your expertises in the future.:D
