I just finished breaking in my new motor according to the owners manual. I noticed the engine is burning oil(blue smoke) out of the exhaust. Not alot but noticeable. I checked the oil when I pulled the boat out, it was fine. The engine runs great but the blue smoke has me worried. Any ideas? or is this normal for a new motor?

Re: New Yamaha F50 4 stroke Smoking

I got a F40 last year. I noticed exhaust exiting from the leg somwhere above the water line when I first used it. It wasn't that noticeable but was just like you describe. It's still there but I only notice it sometimes which might mean it's getting less.

My motor runs like a dream also and doesn't use any oil. I've 18 hours up and followed the running in carefully. I had an oil change at 13 hours.

I'm pretty sure it's normal.

Maybe one of the Tech's could comment?

Did you get the new EFI version of the F50?

Cheers

Andy

oil usasge in the first 20 hours or so is rather normal. you will get less smoke at start up if at shut down you trim the engine up some to prevent oil from draining past the rings.but when ya burn a hydrocarbon fuel soot/smoke can be a byproduct.

Thanks for the help, Called the yamaha tech that installed the motor, and he pretty much said what you guys said. He said it is normal for a new motor to smoke. He said it will probably do it until it is broke in real good, sometimes out to my second oil change.
