Hi all,

I am new to boating. Just bought a 1986 16.5 ft Larson open bow with a 120hp Evinrude. No owners manual and the previous owner could not answer this question. I wish I had a pic for better explanation.

Just below where the ignition key goes in there is a black knob than can be turned. The prev owner has no idea what it does so never used it. May be asking a lot without a pic but does anyone know what it may be for?

Also, he has been running cheap motor oil, Canadian Tire stuff. Is there an advantage to me in switching to Evinrude XD50 at this point?

The motor smokes like hell upon the first start of the season, took a bit to start it while choking. Always has he says but then is ok after that. And yes it did SMOKE upon starting for the first time this year, embarrassingly so. But then was ok.

Any thoughts and Thanks in advance

Re: Newb here needs help.

The throttle friction knob sets tension on the control handle so that it will not drift if you let it go. Turn it clockwise to increase friction, but no more than necessary to stop the handle from slipping.

XD50 has the advantage of a carbon treatment additive whch will help to reduce carbon build up.

Proper storage and winterizing requires the addition of fogging oil; it has to burn off after storage and will smoke a lot initially.

Thank-You ezeke :), nice to know what that knob is for lol. Also he did say he fogged every year before storing so I guess the initial smoking is ok and expected. I've learned something on my first day as a boat owner, so glad I joined!!

Thanks again :)
