Hello everyone. Got myself a boat at last! I've over twenty years motor trade experience so like to think I know my way around internal combustion engines....or did.... Engine in question is 5.7 GSI PBYCCE........and I quess you kinda know already I've got a fuel pump issue, huh? Yep, it whines....sometime......I idle boat ten min before going out. 3 min out the harbour and I give it the beans. But it spluts fluctuates then dies. (Fuel pump whining loudly) Two weeks ago did 1.5 hour run she was fine. Anyway, started, cut out, started, cut out, started cut out, then simply wouldn't start......Right in the mouth of Portsmouth harbour. Which was nice.....towed back then about an hour later started. Fuel pump whined, then quiet. Scared to go back out now! And I've read horror stories on here....... Having searched around this very helpful site, I've found my fuel pump set up quite rare. It doesn't have a fuel cell, just a low pressure pump sat on top the spin on fuel filter, then secondary high pressure pump for TBI. It's this one that squeals. Today I simply unplugged the LOW press. pump and ran it up fine. Surely this wouldn't allow the engine to run on the one high pressure pump? Anyhow, I cannot hear or feel low pressure pump doing anything... I'll maybe get a new lp pump then check/change anti syphon valve tank end. Anything else I should be looking at? Fuel pressure regulator?

I not really familiar with your set up, however, can you unscrew the the high pressure pump and look at the intake screen to see if it is blocked? When you run it, does the pump get really hot? Does it have a 1/4" water line running to the pump from the thermostat housing that isn't blocked. That is where I would start.

Below is the diagram of your fuel system, there are 2 pressure test points ie. high & low (item 2 on the Diagram) they are shrader valves you need to check the pressure at both these points both running and at idle, see attachment for correct pressures. You might like to eliminate the tank and pickup by running off an independent source ie. outboard tank.

When I had fuel pumps whine, I pulled apart both pumps and cleaned the suction screens. Mine were hard to find because they were covered with black paint, but they are there. Clean them with spray carb cleaner. The high pressure pump will whine also if the low pressure pump is not operating. Also if your filter is not tight, the low pressure pump will suck air and not pump and the high pressure pump will whine. Check both pumps for correct pressure. Dave-R
