Hello Everyone,

We purchased a 1972 Winner Bimini a few weeks ago which is my first boat. I have been searching several weeks to figure out what I have and how to maintain it which most came from this forum.
Here is what I know about the boat-
- 1972 Winner Bimini Inboard
- Previous owner swapped the 2.5L engine for a 1987 OMC 3.0L GM 302AMFTC
- Sterndrive is a Mercruiser with a label HP 120/140 and the serial # is 3418026. From my research it's a MC-1???

There are 2 categories on the forum Mercury and OMC Outdrives, does this mean the Mercury Outdrives had a Ford engine only with the package and OMC was GM? I want to try and post my questions in the proper location.

Thanks,

Marc,

I have worked on Automobiles for 35+ years and assumed the Ford and GM blocks had different bolt patterns that wouldn't allow parts to be exchangeable. Boating does seem to be different from what I have learned in the last 3 weeks. LOL

the 3.0 is a GM industrial motor made in mexico used by everyone that used the 3.0...... OMC, Mercruiser, Volvo, etc. however only the block and heads are from GM the other content comes from the company that marinizes it.

so if your OMC motor was stripped down to the long block then built back up with all merc parts......its a merc.

if your OMC was not stripped down to the long block and retains much of its OMC specific stuff......its a frankenmotor.

AD, if the OMC block had all the mercruiser stuff put on it then wouldn't it be the same as a mercruiser?

Agree, just going by what I'm reading, don't know the full story if there is on :noidea:
Until there is a problem asked, I'm in the doesn't matter opinion

I didn't get much info when I bought the boat, owner had just put a rebuilt 3.0 engine in it. I think the Merc Sterndrive is original as the serial # matches the year of the boat..... Not 100% though.

Did I understand you correctly that all 3.0 L engines are from GM?

Yes, all 3.0 motors are GM industrial motors. Fork lift, trash pump, generators and marine

I appreciate the education, makes sense now. I have learned much in the last few weeks but some things I can't find answers using a search bar. I hope to be a resource also one day once I learn and can pass it forward.
