Newbie fuel system questions

I decided to take on the task of rebuilding the carbs on my 1985 Evinrude VRO 70, since it had been idling rough and bogging when going to WOT the last couple of seasons, and the last carb servicing would have been at least 5 years ago.

I bought 3 carb kits and went about taking off the air silencer cover and base. In trying to figure out how everything was hooked up so I stood a chance of getting it back together correctly, I disovered that on two of the carbs, there was a small diameter hose that had come loose from a nipple at the back of the carb. These hoses (I surmised that these were not the main fuel lines) all seemed to be connected and routed to the primer solenoid. Are these part of the low-speed fuel system or vacuum hoses of some sort? I am hoping that this might have been the cause of some of my issues so that I can leave my carb rebuild to the end of the season.

Also, I noticed that all the fuel lines seemed to be clamped with what look like plain old cable ties. Does anyone replace these with band clamps or something else when repairing/replacing fuel lines?

An lastly, is there a difference between carb cleaner and carb solvent? I found some carb cleaner in a spray can that says it is for 'external caburetor parts'...I was imaginging something more like a jug of varsol that you soak the parts in but didn't see anything like that.

Sorry for the long post...just trying to learn.

The small diameter hose from the primer is to deliver fuel to the carbs. when the primer is engaged. They are not clamped normally but if they are loose fitting it's either the wrong hose size or the hose is permanently expanded. You could try cutting a 1/2 inch of them and see if they go back on tight. I normally buy carb. cleaner in spray cans at WalMart. Not sure what it says on them but it does the job. They do make carb soak cleaners as well. Take pictures of the linkages etc. prior to pulling the carbs. You may be glad you did. Best of luck. Rick.
