Newbie here with a 3 part question

Good day all.
I picked up a fixer upper 22 foot pontoon for the family, it came with a 90hp v4 Johnson. I cant tell the year or model number as i cant find the numbers where they are supposed to be located.
Question number 1 could these numbers be anyplace other than a tag or as described in previous postings? Only numbers i can find is the ones on the block.
question number 2 I had started pulling my lower end to inspect water impeller and replace. However i cant pull the lower end down past 2 or 3 inches. Once again I have no idea on the year of this v4 but it looks 80,s or even mid 70,s..Does the shifter rod pivot has to come out on this motor just like the 90,s motors?
Last and final question I have found that my tilt will not go up. I have power and the motor runs. How ever should i not be able to pull the motor up by hand? It seems like the piston is frozen in the down position. I opened the hydrolic line and it had no fluid in it any help is appreciated.
I am sure if i could locate the numbers and the year this would be a lot easier for me to look up.

The motor model number (which gives you the year) should be on the mounting bracket somewhere. If not, look for something like this on the block http://media.photobucket.com/image/recent/bankerjohn/Johnsonwelshplug.jpg Your lower unit is not dropping because the shift rod needs to be disconnected in the powerhead kinda under the carbs (it's tight but you should not have to remove the carbs).

Hello zolkat. I'm including a few pics from my '79 - 85hp to try to help you with your questions. I believe
that your 90hp would be 1981 or above.

1. Look for welsh plug on top of powerhead. Mine is on top of cylinder #2.


2. You will have to disconnect the shift rod just below the carbs. Use extension(s) with 5/16" socket and flex.


3. You will not be able lift the motor up by hand until you open the manual release valve. There is an access hole
on the starboard stern bracket (1-2 turns c/c to release). Your problem may be caused by low fluid level. If so,
you may also have a leak.
-Manually tilt motor up and engage lock lever
-Remove reservoir fill screw, add fluid (dexron II atf will work), replace fill screw
-Manually raise and lower motor a few times to remove air from system
-Repeat until fluid stays level with fill hole
If you find a leak, and have to do a reseal job, let me know, I have some pics that may help you there.
