newbie needs help with prop on 2.5l merc

k i just traded for this boat so i dont know much about it. but anyhow there is something wrong with the prop. its a new prop put on right before i got the boat. and from the maintenance manuals i have there is a continuity washer missing. but it is on the outside of the prop away from the boat. so my problem is that the lip on the side of the prop towards the boat is hitting the drive housing. i checked on a buddies of mine and his has about a 1/4 inch space. and what i noticed is that his shaft has like a spring action to it. the shaft on mine u can pull it in and out, no spring action. now what is there inside that makes the spring action and how do i get to it and should that solve my problem of the prop being to far in? any help will be greatly appreciated.

also this is in a 1985 imperial 19.5 ft. 2.5l merc i/o

You might check the thrust hub which is between the prop and the drive. I don't know if having it on backward would cause you problem or not. The flat side goes next to the motor.

There's Nothing Wrong with your Propshaft,...
You're Missing theThrust Hub in front of the Prop...
