hanging the impeller on my 15 hp outboard... i have the lower leg off, the shift rod has alot of apparantly carbon buildup on it... it's a 17 year old motor... is that normal...?
ALso, when i put the shift rod back in, do i "grease the WHOLE rod or just the ends?

What kind of grease? can i use high speed bearings grease like i used to pack my bearings on my trailer...?

Finally, i am changing the shift rod seals... do i need a seal tool or is thre another way to do it?

Thx folks

If you unscrewed & took the lower shifting rod out of the lower unit, you now may have a couple of issues. (1) if you did not clean the cavity where the shifting rod goes in & the cavity is dirty, & you have removed the shifting rod, you now may have debris that has fallen into the gearbox. (2) Another issue will be in reinstalling & threading the lower shifting rod into the shifting yoke (locating this now impossible to see yoke threads). You may get lucky but there is the possibility you may have to totally disassemble the lower unit & use an alignment cable to position the yoke, while holding onto it from inside & thread the rod in at the same time before you assemble the gears.

Like Altn said, go to my LeeRoy's Ramblings http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Ramblings.html & then to #20 OB 9.9/15hp Lower Unit/Water Pump section which may help. It even has an exploded view of the lower unit.

Good luck
