Newbie - question about battery switch

I have a 1983 Four Winns with a 388 Merc I/O. We hooked up the batteries today and when we turned the batter switch to the on position; the engine started to turn over immediately without having to put a key in. What would cause the engine to start as soon as the battery is turned on?

Could it be a stuck throttle or a problem with the battery switch?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Either the starter solenoid is being energized or it's actually stuck in the activated position. You could disconect the small wires going to it and see. If it stops you need to trace them back, if it still turns the engine over then it's stuck, try tapping it with a mallet.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll try that in the morning.

If the mallet works, have the starter rebuilt.
