Well I'm not sure if this is it but I have a 6 gallon tank for my 2 stroke Johnson. I put one pint of oil in. (50:1) Anyways I used my boat the other day for about an hour. It worked great! Well today I stopped at the Gas station to fill up my Jeep and I figured I'd top of My 6 gallon tank in the boat with out using any oil. I put about 1 1/2 gallons into the tank. When i got to the lake the engine ran fine for about 3 mins. then it just died. Is it because I added the extra gas without oil? If so how can I fix the problem? I assume you have to flush the gas out of the engine but How do I go about this? My first boat so please no laughing... :)

jeepgeye,

Things aren't as bad as you might think. There was a time when OMC suggested a 100:1 mix for motors that were used for long periods of slow trolling. That mixture was later rescinded to a richer mixture of 50:1. I would add 4 oz. of oil (2.6 oz oil per gal.) and idle run the motor for 15 minutes to purge the fuel lines and carb bowl. I would watch closely the motor temperature, tell-tale etc. I seriously doubt you did any real damage. I think you may have other issues as to the reason why the motor just stopped.

This is a chart to calculate small amounts of mixing when topping up.
http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/oil_gas.html
I also don't think the 66:1 would have made much difference for a short time. Continual running at this mixture would though. I don't see how it would be possible for OB's to be specifically formulated for 50:1 EXACTLY, when fuel and motors have changed so much over 30 years.
Just DON' T DO IT AGAIN... OK :D

Great Replies guys!
I'm going to check it out first this in the morning. Though it is starting to worry me that I couldn't get it started again. Maybe I'll check the filter and go from there.
Honestly it ran like a dream the day before.

Anyways I'll keep ya posted. Thanks again

jeepgeye

You did no harm with the oil mixture. Look for other causes of the problem. Check the fuel lines and connectors. Make sure the bulb is staying firm. Vent on gas tank open? Spark plugs OK? Good fire to plugs? Spray a little pre-mix(NOT starting fluid) into the carb and see if it fires. Start with the basics and let us know.
