Hi all,
I am new to this board and new to boats and motors. I know nothing about them but bought one recently. I have an inboard mercruiser v-4.
My question is...I was going to use this boat for the first time so I hooked up the muffs to the intake with a water hose to start the engine to make sure it all worked.
When I started the engine water came out right at the bottom of the motor right against the boat....don't know what it is called but it is a small little hole located on each side. Can anyone tell me is this normal..where is the water supposed to come out?
I know this is a dumb questions but I need to learn this stuff.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Newbie question on mecruiser inboard

On your i/o system this is normal. These holes are backpressure relief holes. Water should exit from these holes and through the prop hub.

BTW welcome to iboats. There are a lot of people here that are more than willing to answer any guestions you may have 24-7.

Re: Newbie question on mecruiser inboard

There is a difference between a straight "Inboard" and an I/O. The I/O has the oudrive on the back of the boat and this is what I am assuming you have.
Those 2 holes are about an inch in diameter and are exhaust idle reliefs, and yes it's normal for water to come out of those when on the muffs.
What year is your boat, and what engine do you have? Never heard of a V4, You may have an inline 4 or even a V6 or V8.
Anyway, here is a link for a 2001 Mercruiser I/O owners manual that should help you with some terminology and how to information.

Owners Manual
