Do you have problems starting it when it does crank over, or problem that it just clicks most of the time, sometimes it works?
Does it crank and crank and not start? Do you use the throttle at all?
And finally, and trust me, this is not meant in a mean way, but have you ever run a carburated engine before?

don, lol, i `m new to this---how do i set the choke?
do i push the throttle up and the back, then turn the key?
will it start with the blower motor running?
sometimes when i turn the key, i hear a click, the guages jump back and forth, but the engine doesnt try to turn over---i keep trying, then i can get the engine to start (hooray!)

Re: newbie question-starting mercruiser 3.0

Wow sounds like my old 02 Chevy Blazer 1500!

The starter was going bad for along time and once I knew what was wrong I just played along until it one day wouldnt start. It would sometimes ( alot ) just make one click when you turned the key. If you turned the key a second time sometimes a 3rd time was needed, but if you did it fast between clicks the starter would catch and the motor would start right up. I replced the starter and the problem went away.

I had to replace the solinoid on my starter on my 3.0 Mercruser 10 years ago in my Webbcraft 19 footer. On that starter the solinoid was easy to change and you didnt need to change the entire starter. It was actually falling apart and once I replaced it I had no problems. Check the solinoid and see if its tight where the connectons are, mine was loose and broken!

Also if the starter is just doing click click click click its eiter a low battery or loose connections and may not be the starter at all.

I now have a 4.3 carbed mercruser in my 07 BAYLINER and yea, it says the motor is an INSTANT START but if it sits for a week the motor needs to crank a bit before it starts up. SO, I just do what WAS NEEDED on the old 3.0. Push in throttle button and pump the throttle once. Turn key and wa,la the motor starts right up. I dont know why this new 07 carbed motor is an instant start, hell its a carb and i know you need to pump some gas so it will fire right up and it does. Its not MPI so its not instant start as far as Im concerned!

While a loose or corroded battery connection may very well be your problem and should be the first thing you check, that isn't the only reason for the click-clicks, and it's a fairly easy system to troubleshoot, Click Here

Normally when starting a cold engine you will need to pump the throttle 1 or more times then set the throttle at about 1/4 throttle and start it. Then bring the throttle back to about 1000 to 1200 rpm to warm the engine.

Best thing you could do is get some service manuals for your engine and drive to help in any repairs and troubleshooting. Use this link, http://www-alt.mercurymarine.com/mnetdata/sisdata/srvcovr.pdf you need manual #26 for your engine, and #14 for your drive.
You can also get an Owners Manual Here

BL185, It's called the Turn Key Start system, not INSTANT START and it has a primer built in that works off engine temp that primes the engine automatically when starting cold.

NEW BATTERY
Check the voltage on that new battery with a digital meter if you have one.
I bought 2 new batteries last fall and had all sorts of problems.
1 had a dead cell, killed both 12 miles out on lake Erie. Thank God for Marine Rescue. $400.00 jump Expensive lesson

will it start with the blower motor running?

Yes it will start with the Blower Motor running.

Blower should be used for a couple of minutes BEFORE trying to start it, and should continue to be ON at less than planing speeds.

If I were you I would buy a set of muffs and try it out at home before you go all the way down to the lake and then find out it won't start. It also makes the people waiting in line at the boat ramp get really upset if your sitting at the dock messing around with it.

+1 on the muffs. I always start mine b4 I hit the road. Lately I'll start it the night b4 also. Makes me feel happy all over and scares the cats.

Re: newbie question-starting mercruiser 3.0

I vote for he has a corroded wire lead or a corroded line and it could be by yhte circuit break in the bilge area ! i had a issue just like that so i changed the battery cables and lead to the circuit breaker and been burning gas since all season lol....when it clicks it's normally not a starter problem the starter is trying it's just not getting no juice from the battery to turn it over! make sure you have positive on positive and vice versa, even if you choke it or prime it that will not make the battery any stronger. YOU NEED POWER TO THAT STARTER...
