I am rebuilding/modifying a 16' mirrocraft aluminum. I have it almost gutted. I have yet to cut the front bow cover (not sure what it's called) off. I will remove the top of the bow shortly.

After looking at this boat i have some questions that hopefully someone here can help me with.

I would prefer to use a heavier gauge diamond plate aluminum for all the metalwork involved in stiffening of the boat. i want a flat floor with a small, raised casting deck in the front. A storage box/seat in the middle of the boat, and two storage box/seats at the rear of the boat in each rear corner.

Thats my dream. Now back to what i have.
i will build the boxes/seats out of plywood but from what i've been reading you guys coat them with some sort of epoxy or fibreglass resin. what exactly is it and it's purpose? To seal the wood completely? Also, after i make and seal all my wood pieces, can i screw them to the mounting tabs with any old screw or is one or another better?

Can i just drill holes and use rivets to join together two different thicknesses of aluminum? How heavy a guage of aluminum is "too heavy' for this boat or to work with?

Also the transom, how do i get the wood out of the transom, it's really really rotted and has some screwholes poked in it. i want to rebuild it proper and solid so it lasts. The tag on teh boat says it's rated for 75hp (although i'm only putting on a 25hp) i wish to rebuild the transom so that if i sell it or come across a bigger motor i can put it on.

Hints, ideas, recommendations, tips or tricks? i'm young, eager to learn and already got started. Just need some guidance then i'm off teh races! lol

Re: Newbie questions

Check out any of the Starcraft SS restore forums. I think you could pretty easily replicate that set up in your boat. Remove the closed bow, rivet some aluminum angle at the height you want your front casting deck and install a plywood deck

We seal our wood with epoxy resin to waterproof it. Do not confuse eposy resin with polyester resin. poly needs to be used with fiberglass to have any strength.

I used deck screws for most of my carpentry

You should be able to rivet together varying thickness of aluminum with no issues. Lowes did have a couple sized of all aluminum rivets

Removing your transom shouldn't be too big a deal and I would definitely replace it while I was at it. Just remove all fasters, the end caps and trim piece and dig/slide it out. Mine was pretty well stuck in there and I have to pry it out from the inside with a 2x4.
