Hi everyone,

I have just aquired a 1977 Crestliner / AMF Muskie 550 with a 1977 Johnson 50hp O/B. I have a lot of work to do on the boat but mainly cosmetic thankfully. I have not attempted to fire up the motor yet but she looks in great shape. It has never been used in salt water and was flushed every year and well maintained. The boat and motor have not been used for about 5 years!!! What should I check, do and or replace before I attempt to start her again for the first time.

Howdy TeeZee and welcome to iboats.
The very first thing I would do is get a repair manual.
You can get a generic manual here from iboats:
iboats Manual

or you can get a factory manual with a parts list and owners manual at:

Factory Manual.

Then, I'd replace the water pump.

c/6
Hooty

Well I am so pleased to have had so many responses in such a short time. I feel good to be part of the boating community and this forum is really impressive. I hope I will be able to contribute to it as I learn more.

Well I have purchased the Manual for the Engine and it’s on its way to me now. I will take all your great advice and work on the motor this weekend. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks again for your responses.
