I just bought a jon boat that came with an Evinrude 4.5 which I was told was made in 1980. The model # is E5RCSS. Can anyone tell me the year for sure ? That's my first question. Second is the problem have with it.
The motor has not been run in quite some time.
I changed the in-line fuel filter, it was filthy. The marine parts store did not have the same small filter as the one I took off it. They recomended I get one from a lawn mower shop. I got one but still it was twice the size as the one that was on there.Along with the new fuel filter I changed the plugs and put gas in the tank. Gas started leaking straight out of the carb and continued till I plugged the line. Could the bigger fuel filter caused more gas to come through the carb ? Or I think it might have something to do with the choke valve.Around the choke valve it also says (fuel valve) with arrows indicating on or off. I'm not sure what it is indicating. Stupid question.- In which direction does the fuel-flow indicator arrow face. Towards the carb or the gas tank? This is my first outboard motor and don't really know much yet.I Appreciate your help.

Thanks

JR :(

Hi

Fuellow arron must point towards carb.

Your carb is flooding because the motor har sat for long. Pull the carb, remove the bottombowl ( be sure everything gets in place afterwards, the little centergasket too ) and clean the little needle valve carefully. Since your in there clean every passage of carb carefully, using fresh gas and compressed air. I think this should solve your problem.

Thanks for the reply. Ok, I have the fuel flow the correct way.

I only poured the gas in the tank and did not even try to start the motor. Would it still flood like that ?

Thanks,

JR

Yes, it would still pour out if you pressured up the system (pumped the little hootie-kye on the fuel line).

Sounds like your carb float is gummed up and stuck, or your needle valve and seat need replacing, like the fellow said. I would suggest getting a carb kit for it and maybe take the carb into a shop and letting the mechanic clean out the jet(s). I had a 1965 6hp evinrude and I put a carb kit on it and it still ran like crap, so I took it to the local guru and he found a lump of crap plugging up the low speed jet. It ran like a champ after he cleaned it out.

cvlngineer

If I'm correct, I don't think there is a (hootie-kye) on the fuel line. It goes from the tank through the fuel filter and then to the carb.

JR

Yes, it would still pour out if you pressured up the system (pumped the little hootie-kye on the fuel line

Hootie-Kye = bulb. The thing you pump to prime the carb. Sorry for my scientific terms he he.

Re: Newbie with Evinrude 4.5

Mine has an internal tank so I dont have the primer bulb. I just discovered that the shut off valve link is broken off so I figure that it was broken while in the on position and thats why the gas is pouring out the carb. Please tell me this could be the problem. The previous owner did state that the problem was minor. The choke plays a dual role. One, as the choke and two, as the on/off fuel valve. The motor seems to be in great condition otherwise,no nicks and scratches etc. from being worked on. It also is very clean and looks well taken care of. What do you think ?

Thanks,

JR

Hello Sabbath
Yes your motor is a 1980 4.5hp. You are correct in the operation of your fuel ****\choke knob. Your fuel system is indeed gravity fed. You will want to repair the fuel shut off funtion. If your carb floods with motor in the run position, with the fuel on, then you will need to clean and service the carb. Pay speical attention to the float and float valve. If you have no way to close the fuel line you will have fuel all over the place when you tilt or transport the motor. Also while tied to the dock, the waves can make your float in the carb bounce (open and close) causing a flooding condition,or fire hazard, etc. These are not difficult or expencive repairs to make. Good luck. Let us know if you need more help.
