do onboard battery chargers work like an alternator on a car and continiously charge your batteries by using its own battery power or does it just make it easier to charger your batteries while not in use...example: no more unhooking and hauling 70lb batteries into the garage to be charged one at a time. just hook the outlet up with an extension cord and now your charging..
let me know

my buddy and i were arguing about this the other day.

The answer is

Smart Charger (look them up on the internet)
can charge multi batteries without overcharging in different stages

I installed one 4 years ago with new bats
bats still hold full charge and require very little maintance

at first they look costly but I did the math and the pay back is about 5 years

The later, they make it easier to charge your batteries when they are not in use. Some can charge multiple batteries at the same time, or can be used to keep them topped off during long periods of no use. It would not be used while you were boating (unless you had a really really really long extension cord, and even then, not a good idea to use an extension cord while on the water!).
