I bought my very first prop boat this weekend. I've always had jet boats, I grew up with them and have just always trusted their simplicity. And now maybe I know why....

Anyways, I bought a 2001 Crownline 202BR. This thing is a creampuff, it is just like new. It has 148 hours on it and looks and runs great. The drive train is a Volve Penta 5.0GL SX. However, and I hope I didn't get burned too badly on this, but it ran great on the water test ride, but now I've noticed something that I didn't really notice on the test ride (and didn't know was not right). This boat at WOT shows 5500 on the tach, and the boat seems to have some vibration that howls through the hull at WOT. Now, maybe "howls" is a harsh word, but there is a definite increase in noise and it sure seems like the noise comes from vibration resonating through the hull...at least that's my untrained take on it. Anyways, the boat runs wonderfully up through 5000 RPM, it's just that last bit of top end that the noise comes along at. I've read that WOT on this setup should be at 4400 to 4800 RPM, so if this tach is accurate, this thing is really overrev'ing. And although I didn't have my GPS with me, I don't think we were going all that fast, even with all that RPM (I seriously doubt we were going 50).

The previous owner said it was a brand new, never run prop on it as they had dinged up the old one on a tree branch in the water. And I believe it, the prop looks like it just came out of the box. But get this...it's a Michigan Wheel Vortex 992006, which is a 3-blade 14X23...now, I don't know anything about prop boats, but from what I've read, this prop has way more pitch than the stock prop had...I'm expecting this boat to be asking for a 14X15 or 14X17, but 5500 RPM on a 23 pitch prop?

And these Michigan Wheel props...they are really inexpensive...are they any good?

Help a newb out please. Oh, by the way, hi everyone, I'm John from Northern Cal......

Re: Newbie with questions

The noise you hear may be the gimbal bearing. Would be a good idea on a new to you boat to pull the outdrive and inspect for water in the bellows and a rusty bearing will make noise.
Since most of this question is about the prop, I am going to move this over to the prop forum.

It's not unusual for the SX drives to run a higher pitch than you'd expect, it all has to do with gear ratio. However, I'd suggest checking the tach first. Once the tach is verified then you can proceed with prop choices. I wouldn't be surprised to find the tach itelf is off.

As suggested verify the tach; may be as simple as operating the switch on the back a few times to clean the contacts.Prop calculator says 71 mph at 10% slip.with the 23" prop.
My guess is your actually not making max rpm.

Re: Newbie with questions

Again, it all depends on gear ratio. I've sold several 23" props for SX drives (stock motors) that put us in the right rpm range. Let's verify the tach and then look at gear ratio. Once we have all the accurate info we can figure this out. I really suspect the tach may be off. Especially if it's a Faria.
