hey guy's just got an old bayliner with a foce 70 hp. guy owed me money so i got the boat. here is the deal i have never owned a boat but my two best buddys are avid boaters. they have given me a good run down on the boat and that seem to be good to go. now onto the engine they have told me a bit about the force reputation one of them has had a couple in the past he felt they were a bit short on power and basic but not too bad with some good maint. so this thing has not been well maintained. it does start and run but i am going to do a full maint on it before next spring so i have a couple of things i need to know where do i get the serial# from on the engine so i can get a manual and will seafoam do the job for decarbing? or is there somthing better? i have been an auto tech for years and have a lot of experience building two strokes moslty sleds so the engine does not worry me too much just need to get my sea legs i geuss! cheers and thanks in advance for any tips or info

Re: newbie

welcome to the forum, I was a newbie and prolly still am but have learned alot from this forum. Im a car mech as well, but this is not like your car forums. theses guys are really helpful.

Serial number on my force is on the right side lookin at the motor kinda below where the motor pivots on the bracket. hope that helps

I havent read much about seafoaming like how you would do on car motors, its best to take the carb off and rebuild or clean out manually to clean out the carbs.

Starting problems are pretty much the same dignostics if its turning and no fire. Spark and fuel tests.

Re: newbie

thanks for the reply the seafoam is more for decarbonizing at least that is my plan there are other products just want to see what the guy's are using. carb will get a teardown and clean for sure just to see whats up in there, as i said it does not look like the guy took much care of it had a bit of a look around tonight and it would seem to have the newer style red stator so that seems to be good news tommorow is a comp test and a bit more cleaning then she gets coverd up for the winter it was damm cold washing it down today! once i find the ser.# i will order up a manual any tips on the best one? cheers

Re: newbie

got ya i use bg intake system cleaner for my decarbin but dunno if its good on marine motor. To be honest the oem service manual was amazing when i got it. its a $70 manual, gotta love ebay got it for $19. Practically brand new. :D i would highly suggest ebay oem service manual. its funny because i was first looking for a haynes manual, you know what i mean lol.

Hey, 1st off, welcome.. The Force ID badge is located on the front of the lower cover infront of the motor. (check out my pics) The manual you want to get is the Clymer, it covers all motors. The one I have is from 1984-1999. Seafoam can be your friend if you use it right. Don't forget that a routine part of every boat tune up in the spring is to replace the waterpump impeller (they're cheaper than the motor) you can get one right here on iboats. There is a "sticky" on it at the top of the forum. When you do, check the waterpump housing for damage, they wear out. The Senior members will tell you, but get a good stabilizer treatment for the ethynol in reg gas, it's bad for the hoses/carb seats and needles. Good luck! Have fun, check in often....
