Purchased a 1994 Four Winns Freedom with stern drive many years ago. For a host of reasons, good and bad, never did use it over the past 15 years. I learned the hard way the woes of improper winterizing and now that I've taken the boat out of hibernation, I've discovered that she has a cracked block (volvo-penta 3.0 gs with omc/cobra outdrive.

I've got the option of purchasing a new crate gm 3.0. What I do understand is the flywheel will swap over to the crate engine and I can use the existing coupler.

The other option is a rebuilt 3.0 from 1984. The seller swears up and down that it is a direct fit but something is telling be that it may not be and that the lower initial price of the rebuilt engine will disappear with new flywheel, coupler incompatibilities.

I've tried finding the answer in the archives to no avail. So will an 80's model 3.0 4 cylinder bolt right in to my 94 or not?

Any information would be greatly appreciated so I can finally get the boat in the water and start having some fun this summer with the family.

Thanks

Welcome.
Buy the new.
Just make sure you "marinize" it.
Unless you can guarantee it won't ever hit salt water.
Check around you might find a new already converted from the factory.

Thanks for the responses. I did find a low hour 1998 that is an even swap. Old motor is out, new motor is almost ready to go in. Got all the accessories swapped over. Of course, the oil cooler end cap popped off while pulling the hoses. Looked at the prices of new coolers and decided to clean up the old one and resolder the cap back on. Also need to double check the oil fill tube again...seems a bit loose even though I've tightened the fittings.

Now for the reinstall, alignment, and minor rotten stringer repair, seat wood rebuilding and....she'll be ready to go! Nothing but love for her from this point on:)
