Newby question on how to throttle engine

I just purchased a 88 Bayliner Capri 19.5ft with a 5.0 Chevy and a Cobra outdrive. Everything is tip-top shape in the boat. I was wondering if there was a way to throttle the engine without engaging the outdrive?

the shifter either has a button to push in or u pull entire shifter handle out and move throttle.
