Hello to all.... Newby here.... Just aquired a 2002 Javelin 170 SC.. This boat is in need of some fiberglass repairs (Dont think anything major-- HOPEFULLY). I have some automotive bodyshop experience, but no fiberglass experience!!

I will be posting photo's very soon, and look forward to any and all input, suggestions and verbal help on this "Project"!!!

I am quite sure I will have ALOT of questions for you repair-restoration folks!!!

FYI,, boat was in the water, tied up, in a storm, but got banged up pretty good, and also had some small tree limbs hit one side. I believe it is a managle project to get this boat in fine working order, and get it back on the water--Hopefully by spring!!

Most important, from what I have read on, and been told to check is the transom... it is solid from what I can tell no hollow sounds when tapped with a screwdriver handle, have nto seen any damage, other than a top trim piece screw pulled out of trim piece..

Again I will be posting pics very soon, and look forward to eveyone's input, suggestions and verbal help!!

Thanks for looking, an hope to get soem MUCH needed info to complete this project!!!!!

Is your boat an outboard? If so, test the transom for flex by putting your weight on the motor with it trimmed up. If it flexes at all, the transom is compromised. Mine felt solid when I tapped on it but was another story when I weighted it. Also, have you core tested the deck?

A core test is basically drilling a hole and looking a the quality of the wood. It's pretty easy to tell if you've gotten into rotten wood when you do it. Guys will core test the transom from inside the boat by drilling through the inside fiberglass skin and going in about an inch. You can do a couple spots high and low and if you get dry wood coming out then you will know for sure you are in good shape. Core testing is also done to check for deck rot. Start by seeing if the deck is soft when you put your body weight on one foot move up and down, then it's probably rotten. If that's the case then the stringers are likely shot too and you will have to do what I am doing which is a stringer, deck and transom replacement. Even if it's not soft, you may want to core test it in a couple spots to be sure. The holes are patched with epoxy of PB, I believe. You should check out my project thread. I was where you are at a month ago. http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...wbie-questions-about-project-boat-621756.html
