Hello Everyone,

I'll be looking at this boat in a day or two. Here are some specs and here are some pictures of that model boat (not actual boat). The boat has a 5.0L (carb) Mercruiser and comes with trailer and the normal compliment of goodies (anchor, life jackets, fire extinguisher, etc). It only has about 40 hours on the hour meter. It has been stored outside under a full size mooring canvas since it was new. It has always been trailered (no bottom paint) and never been run in saltwater. The owner did say the mooring canvas is about shot. He only used the boat 1 time last summer. The gasoline in the boat is about 1.5 years old. The owner said the gas was stabilized but he would not use it. He also said it was "professionally maintained". The boat is currently winterized.

I kindly ask for your advice and opinions. Should I be worried about the old gas? What damage (if any) could the old gas have already caused and how much do you think it would cost to get fixed? Should the lack of use (about 40 hours) be of concern? The owner is asking about 13K. Do you think its a good deal?

Has anybody had a similar experience with a different make/model boat?

The Maxum is about 6 years old with only 40 hours. I'm concerned about mechanical/structural problems that may arise because of the lack of use. Can anyone shed some light on this?

That model was Maxum's "entry level" boat for that period. Essentially a Bayliner with Maxum trim. Here is what is usually thought of as "Maxum" for that era - Maxum 2100 SR . As you can see from the photos, the 2100 SR was a different design, much fancier than the SRL. This is why the price on the SRL you found is low. If Maxum is what you want, I would hold out for the 2100 SR.

A '98 is just old enough to have some concern about the wood in the floor, etc. Examine thoroughly. Have the guy start it up. If it doesn't start without a lot of fussing, figure on a few trips to the shop. Of course a professional survey would remove a lot of doubts.

Kelly Cook

Thanks Kelly.

I don't have my heart set on a Maxum. I just thought it may be a good deal since it does not have a lot of use.

I really don't want to fix a lot of problems. A few minor problems would be ok but nothing major. Maybe I'll look at boats that are a little newer.

Going... Going... Gone!!!

I looked at the boat this past weekend. It was in excellent shape. They guy did not use it much (38 hours on the meter) and did his maintenance and winterization religiously.

Since I'm always looking for that great deal, my final offer was $11000. The boat sold for $12500 and was worth every penny IMHO. The only thing wrong was a few minor scratches in the gel coat and a messed up pinstripe (no big deal). The age of the gas (1.5 years) was probably a non-issue because it smelled ok and the guy added stabilizer each fall.

I think the only way I would have gotten that boat was to give the guy his asking price and make him sign on the dotted line because he had people looking at the boat after me and was not in any hurry to jump on the first offer.

Thanks for all of your input!

I'm no expert but 12.5 seems high to me. That thing is 6 years old.

Mercrewser,

That was my initial thought on the boat.

The boat may have been 6 years old but it did not have 6 years of use. It was used very little (no salt water). When not in use, it was well maintained and protected from the elements. When I opened the oil fill cap and looked in with a flashlight, it looked like a new engine. This thing was just about in showroom condition. A similar 2004 boat (Bayliner 215) would probably cost around $22000.
